The short answer
Group your returns by reason and by SKU, find the biggest avoidable cause, change one thing, and compare before and after over a fair period. Never discourage, delay or negotiate with a customer who is entitled to return an item. Walmart's policy prohibits it; reduce returns by getting the product, listing and packaging right.
1. Read the return reasons
Export return data from Seller Center for the last 60 to 90 days. Group the reasons: not as described, wrong item, damaged in transit, defective, no longer needed, did not fit or work as expected. Keep a count and the total cost of each group from the true cost method.
2. Match fixes to causes
| Cause | Typical fix | How to check it worked |
|---|---|---|
| Not as described | Correct titles, images, dimensions, materials, compatibility notes | Share of returns tagged not as described |
| Did not fit or work as expected | Add sizing, fit or compatibility guidance and clear what's-included lists | Return rate on the SKU |
| Damaged in transit | Better packaging, carrier or box size | Damage returns per 100 shipped |
| Wrong item | Pick, pack and SKU labelling checks | Wrong-item returns per 100 shipped |
| Defective | Supplier quality checks, inbound inspection | Defect returns by batch |
3. Change one thing at a time
Pick the highest-cost cause and one SKU group. Make a single change, note the date, and wait for enough orders to compare. If you change five things at once you will not know which one worked.
4. Know when a SKU should change or go
If a SKU's cost per order after returns leaves little or no margin, options include repricing, repackaging, changing the supplier, or retiring it. Use per-SKU numbers, not hunches.
5. Stay inside the rules
Fixes that make a return harder, slower or more expensive for the customer break Walmart's policy. Fixes that make the product, listing and shipment better are safe. Confirm your setup with the compliance checklist.
