Begin with the reason, not the coupon
Separate payment failure, shipping uncertainty, product questions, technical errors, high-value consideration, and simple interruption. Each deserves a different next action.
Use a recovery ladder
- Restore access: provide the checkout link and remove uncertainty.
- Clarify: answer delivery, returns, payment, or product questions.
- Reassure: use accurate proof, support, and policy information.
- Assist: offer human help for high-value or failed-payment cases.
- Incentivize selectively: use a controlled benefit only where margin, eligibility, and predicted lift justify it.
Segment before sending
Useful segments may include first-time versus returning customer, order value, product margin, market, checkout stage, payment event, and recovery history. Exclude completed orders, invalid inventory, unsupported destinations, fraud flags, and contacts without the required permission.
Protect the economics
Set a maximum incentive cost, permitted products, expiry, usage limit, and combination rule. Shopify supports several discount types and lets merchants limit usage; combination settings can affect whether a code works alongside an existing discount.
Respect channel consent
Email consent does not automatically authorize SMS marketing. Shopify’s guidance requires specific SMS opt-in, and the checkout SMS checkbox cannot be preselected. Build the eligible audience before drafting the message.
Measure incrementality, not activity
Track recovered orders and revenue alongside incentive cost, margin, unsubscribes, complaints, and support load. Compare segments or controlled treatments where practical. A high click rate with unnecessary discounts is not a strong recovery system.
When a discount is appropriate
A discount can be rational when it resolves a known price barrier, protects a valuable segment, clears a defined constraint, and remains profitable after expected cannibalization. Make it the result of a decision rule, not the default first email.
