1. The customer was not ready to commit
Some visitors reach checkout to calculate the total, check delivery, compare payment options, or save progress. These sessions are not all recoverable on the same terms. A reminder may help a high-intent visitor; it cannot manufacture product-market fit.
2. The checkout introduced effort
Mobile friction, unclear field requirements, account expectations, address entry, and error recovery can turn intent into delay. Diagnose device and step-level differences before removing information that operations genuinely require.
3. Shipping, tax, or duties changed the decision
A surprise total or uncertain arrival date can halt the purchase. The solution is usually clearer and earlier expectation-setting—not automatically a larger discount.
4. Payment failed
Shopify records payment events in an abandoned checkout timeline. Declines, incorrect card details, address mismatches, failed authentication, inventory conflicts, invalid discounts, and technical failures require different responses. A promotional email is a poor substitute for fixing or explaining a failed transaction.
5. Trust was insufficient
Customers may hesitate when returns, delivery, total cost, security, or support expectations are unclear. Trust is strengthened by accurate policies and operational consistency, not decorative badges that make claims the store cannot support.
6. Recovery was ineligible, mistimed, or misdirected
Not every incomplete checkout can receive an automated email, and SMS requires its own consent. Check automation eligibility, addressability, timing, inventory, and channel permission before judging the copy.
A better first response
Create a cause table from actual checkouts. Count evidence, identify the most costly reliable pattern, fix the upstream barrier where possible, then design a recovery message for the remaining eligible cases. That sequence turns abandonment from a vague marketing problem into an operational diagnosis.
