Squarespace Member Areas or a Dedicated Membership Platform? How to Decide

Member Areas keeps your membership inside your Squarespace site. A dedicated platform may offer more tools but adds another system. Here is how to decide with your own numbers.

Short answer: stay if the manual work is small, compare if it is not

Squarespace Member Areas can be enough when your plans are simple, your member count is manageable and you are comfortable keeping a few manual routines, such as a cancellation log and a monthly review. Consider a dedicated platform when the manual work grows faster than the revenue, or when you need something Squarespace does not document. This article gives criteria, not a verdict, and it names no products because features and prices change.

What Member Areas gives you (as published by Squarespace)

  • Pricing plans with subscription, fixed-amount and free structures.
  • Paywalls on course, videos, blog and member pages, or on individual items.
  • A member list in the Contacts panel and Email Campaigns for messages to members.
  • Refunds in full or in part.

These are statements from Squarespace Help and Squarespace's membership pages, which may change.

Count the cost of staying

Estimate the hours a month you spend on manual work: tracking joins and cancellations, checking payments against access, sending recovery and win-back messages. Multiply by what your time is worth. If that figure approaches the cost of another tool, a comparison is reasonable. If it is small, the simplicity of keeping everything on one site is a real benefit.

Count the cost of moving

Moving a membership is not free. Members must create new accounts or sign up again, and some may not come with you. Plan the move as a communication project: who moves, when, what they keep, and how you handle people who do not. The book has a category on migrating from a third-party platform into Member Areas, and its reverse thinking helps here.

A simple decision rule

  1. List the three things you need most that Member Areas cannot do or does not document.
  2. Verify each on official pages and in your account.
  3. Estimate the monthly cost of manual workarounds.
  4. Compare with the cost, learning time and migration risk of a dedicated platform.
  5. Decide, and set a date to review the decision.

What to do next

Audit what you have first with the retention-gap audit, and read why members cancel to see which problems are really about the platform. The book has a category for exactly this decision.

Third-party membership tools on top of Squarespace

There is a middle route between built-in Member Sites and moving platforms: a third-party membership tool that plugs into your Squarespace site (MemberSpace is one example). These tools add their own plans, gating rules and member dashboards, and they bring their own pricing, limits and support terms. Evaluate them on the same questions as the table above, and read their current documentation, because we have not tested any specific tool for this book.

Frequently asked questions

Should I switch away from Squarespace Member Areas?

Only if verified gaps cost you more than moving would. Check what you need on official pages first, estimate the cost of manual work, and plan any move carefully.

Can I run Member Areas and another tool together?

Some creators do, but that adds complexity and can create access mismatches. Test with a small group before committing.

Is Squarespace Member Areas the same as a tool like MemberSpace?

No. Member Areas (documented as Member Sites) is built into Squarespace. MemberSpace is a separate third-party product that connects to a Squarespace site. They differ in features and pricing, so compare current documentation before deciding.
